Day close

Checking at the end of a shift or day that the cash in the drawer, UPI and card totals match what the billing system says was taken.

Also called cash reconciliation, shift close, Z report, end of day

Day close is the routine of counting the money at the end of a shift and matching it against the sales record. The cash drawer is counted, and UPI, card and credit totals are checked. A mid-shift summary is often called an X report, and the final closing summary a Z report.

Small differences add up over a month. A ₹200 gap every day is ₹6,000 by month end, and nobody can explain it once a week has passed. Closing every day, with the name of the person on the till, finds mistakes while they are still fresh.

A shop opens with a float of ₹2,000. The day's cash sales are ₹18,400, one cash refund was ₹300 and ₹500 was paid out for tea and courier charges. The drawer should hold ₹19,600. If it holds ₹19,450, the ₹150 short is recorded, not quietly ignored.
